Senior Interns to Be Confirmed Automatically Before Replacement
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya, as mandated by the constitution, plays a crucial role in managing various aspects of the teaching profession. This includes teacher registration, the hiring process, promotions, transfers, and ensuring timely salary payments to educators.
In recent times, the CEO of TSC has been diligently pursuing additional funding to tackle the persistent issue of teacher shortages and to facilitate more promotions to higher job groups within the teaching sector.
Furthermore, the commission is actively advocating for improved compensation packages for both primary and secondary school teachers across Kenya, recognizing the importance of recognizing their dedication and hard work.
Amid these ongoing challenges, there is encouraging news for teachers in Kenya. This year has seen a significant development where all educators who began their careers as hired interns from 2019 onwards have now been officially confirmed as permanent and pensionable employees. This move represents a significant step forward in providing job security and financial stability to these dedicated educators.

Moreover, in February of this year, TSC took a proactive step by hiring approximately 20,000 intern teachers, specifically for junior and primary schools. This hiring initiative was aimed at bolstering support for the implementation of the new competency-based curriculum (CBC) in the country.
While some of these newly hired intern teachers have already transitioned into permanent and pensionable positions, a portion of them remain in their internship roles. According to reliable reports, there is a plan in place to ensure that all intern teachers hired in February of this year will eventually progress into permanent and pensionable roles. This transition promises to be a significant milestone in the landscape of teacher employment in Kenya.
Looking ahead, it is anticipated that all intern teachers currently serving in junior and primary schools will receive formal letters confirming their transition to long-term, pensionable positions before the commencement of the next academic year.
This move signifies a positive and forward-looking approach by TSC to secure the future of education in Kenya and ensure the welfare of its dedicated teaching workforce.
