A deputy headteacher holds the second-highest position of authority in a school, right after the head teacher or principal. They work closely with the headteacher, overseeing staff and striving to achieve school objectives.

In a primary school, there are typically two Deputy Head Teachers: Deputy Head Teacher II in job group C4, and Deputy Head Teacher I in job group C5. The Deputy Head Teacher is accountable to the Head Teacher for designing and implementing the curriculum, educational policies, plans, and programs.

When the Head Teacher is absent, the Deputy Head Teacher assumes control of the institution.

The responsibilities of Deputy Head Teachers include:

– Providing guidance and counseling to teachers, non-teaching staff, and students to promote positive values and coexistence.

– Evaluating senior teachers and colleagues.

– Assisting the head teacher in building positive relationships with the community, parents, and other stakeholders.

– Ensuring learner safety and institutional security.

– Preparing lesson plans, timetables, and maintaining academic standards.

– Imparting subject knowledge and skills to students.

– Evaluating and preparing students for exams.

– Introducing innovative teaching strategies.

– Promoting teamwork and consistent curriculum delivery.

– Setting an example for students and maintaining discipline.

– Initiating curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.

– Interpreting the curriculum for effective teaching.

– Organizing workshops and seminars for knowledge sharing.

– Providing support to students with performance gaps.
