TSC Qualifications For Various Administrative Positions In Schools

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has established a wide range of standards that teachers must meet in order to advance to any of the administrative positions in school.

These deployment parameters and criteria are outlined in the Career Progression Guideline for Teachers as well as the Policy on Appointment and Deployment of Institutional Administrators.

To be appointed to any of the administrative posts, a teacher who meets the established criteria applies, is selected, has an interview, and those who are successful are competitively appointed and deployed.

Secondary School Principals

Secondary schools have been classified, and principals in charge of the various categories are assigned to different grades.

Sub-County and All-Day School Principals:

To be appointed as the principal of this type of school, one must have worked as a Deputy Principal (Grade D2) for at least three years. These schools are led by a principal with a grade of 3 (T-Scale 13).

County schools with more than 540 students include:

Senior Principals, Grade D4 (T- Scale 14), lead these schools. A teacher must have served as a Principal at Grade D3 for a minimum of three (3) years before being appointed to this grade.

National and extra-county schools with over 1000 students are led by a Grade D5 (T-Scale 15) Chief Principal.

To be nominated to this grade, one must first serve as a Senior Principal for at least three years; Grade D4.

Secondary School Deputy Principal

Deputy Principal III of Grade D1 (T- Scale 11) for Sub-County and All-Day schools.

To be considered for this post, you must first serve as a Senior Master at Grade C5 for at least three (3) years.

County schools with more than 540 students include:

Grade D2 Deputy Principal II (T- Scale 12). To be assigned to this grade, one must have spent at least three (3) years as a Deputy Principal at D1.

National and extra-county schools with more than 1000 students include: Grade D3 (T- Scale 13);

Deputy Principal I. To be promoted to this grade, one must first serve for at least three (3) years as a Deputy Principal at D2.

Secondary School Senior Masters

Senior Master III of Grade C5 (T- Scale 10), Sub-County and All-Day schools.

To be promoted to this grade, one must have taught in Grade C4 for at least three (3) years.

County schools with more than 540 students include: Senior Master II with a D1 (T- Scale 11) grade.

To be considered for this post, a teacher must have worked as a Senior Master III of Grade C5 (T- Scale 10) for at least three years.

National and extra-county schools with more than 1000 students include: Senior Master I with a Grade D2 (T- Scale 12) certificate.

To advance to this level, a teacher must have worked for at least three years as a Senior Master II with Grade D1 (T- Scale 11).

Headteachers of Primary Schools

Primary schools with fewer than 1000 students:

Head Teacher with Grade C5 (T-Scale 10). A teacher must have served as a Deputy Head Teacher at Grade C4 for at least three (3) years in order to be appointed to this grade.

Primary schools with more than 1000 students:

Senior Head Teacher with Grade D1 (T- Scale 11). To be appointed to this grade, a teacher must have spent at least three (3) years as the Head Teacher of Grade C5.

Primary School Deputy Headteachers

Primary schools with fewer than 1000 students: Deputy Head Teacher II Grade C4 (T- Scale 9). Required experience: At least three years as a senior teacher in Grade C3.

Primary schools with more than 1000 students: Deputy Head Teacher I at Grade C5 (T- Scale 10). Experience required: At least three (3) years as Deputy Head Teacher in Grade C4.

Senior Primary School Teachers

Primary schools with fewer than 1000 students: Senior Teacher II with Grade C2. Qualification: At least three (3) years of experience as a Primary School Teacher I in Grade C1.

Primary schools with more than 1000 students: Senior Teacher I with Grade C3. Experience required: A minimum of three (3) years as a Senior Teacher II in Grade C2.
