TSC puzzle of 1,000 school head posts with no applicants

Due to a dearth of suitable candidates, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is now unable to fill the senior administrative jobs that have been advertised since December of last year,2022.

“Teachers did not apply for advertised posts, leaving thousands of schools without principals and vice-principals,” the TSC report states. Those affected include public schools that serve pupils with disabilities and special needs. From June 9 to June 15, the commission has once more extended the deadline by seven days.

According to the commission, 1,001 available positions remain empty because no applications with stated interest have been filed in the last six months.

Although the commission has often had to re-post these vacancies and extend the application dates, few applications have been received.

Among the positions that need to be filled are those for the following:

  • chief principals
  •  principals
  • deputy principals
  • head teachers
  • deputy head teachers
  • senior masters
  •  senior teachers

The employer of teachers reports that there are now 8 open posts in special needs schools, 6 deputy principal positions, and 987 open vacancies in primary schools for deputy headteachers.

2,592 of the 5,155 vacancies that were declared by the commission during the first round of advertisements remained vacant.

A second job announcement was then made by the commission, but only 1,591 applications were received.

According to the commission, it was believed that extending the deadline would entice more teachers because many schools do not have permanent administrators.

TSC found that a lot of them are staffed by teachers in temporary jobs who aren’t paid for their time.

A shortage of senior heads jeopardises school succession planning since teachers’ unions accuse the TSC of failing to advance them to grades that make them eligible for administrative positions.

The Commission has once more allowed an additional seven days to accept new submissions in response to this situation, from June 9 to June 15, 2023.
