TSC Promises Pension Processing Within Six Months
Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, recently made an announcement that will streamline the process of pension payment for retired teachers who were hired by TSC. As a result, the wait time will be reduced to less than six months.
During his speech to the Senate on August 9, 2023, CS Machogu disclosed that his ministry had issued instructions to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to expeditiously send a teacher’s retirement dossier to the Pensions Department of the National Treasury for expedited processing.
He explained that the procedure for the pension payout would be sped up and finished within four to five months following the submission of this document.
We have emphasised how important it is that the retirement file be sent as soon as possible following a teacher’s retirement in order to get the payment process started. Our first concern is making certain that retired educators are compensated as quickly as possible. We anticipate being able to complete the process in around four to five months. He explained.
issues were voiced by Senator Alexander Mundigi of Embu, who questioned the protracted period of time pensioners were required to wait before getting their pension benefits. The CS responded to these issues by providing an explanation.
Senator Mundigi brought attention to the fact that pension payments are made to retirees from other parts of the public workforce within three months of leaving their jobs.

To ensure that pension payments are made on time, he suggested that the Education Ministry and the National Treasury work together in a more closely coordinated manner. He stated it was unfair to expect people who had consistently received monthly salary to experience delays in pension distribution lasting more than two years. He was referring to the length of the delays.
Senator Mundigi was reassured by Mr. Machogu that the lengthy delays in disbursing the contributions that teachers make to their pensions would be eliminated thanks to the new strategy that was developed by the present administration.
Engaging with the ministry was something that the CS strongly advised seniors who had been waiting more than a year for their retirement benefits to do. He mentioned that any such delays ought to be brought to the notice of the ministry so that an acceptable resolution may be found.
In May, the Chief Executive Officer of the Teacher Service Commission, Nancy Macharia, blamed the National Treasury for delays in pension payments to retired teachers, despite the fact that the TSC had always met the deadlines for submitting the necessary documentation.
According to her, the commission only needs three months to process the appropriate paperwork before submitting them to the Treasury; nevertheless, the payment processing for these submissions is frequently delayed.
Macharia made it clear that the commission gives teachers who are getting close to retirement a year’s notice in order for them to compile the necessary paperwork for their retirement compensation before they actually retire.
