TSC Lists Problems That Affect Effective Teaching In Schools.
The 2021/2022 annual report released by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) indicated shortage of Teachers, lack of professionalism and a slow rate of adopting the ICT skills by the teachers in the country.
The report further indicated that drug and substance abuse, negligence and desertion of Duty and immoral activities have played a major role in hindering effective service delivery in schools.
The commission further explains in it’s report that majority of the teachers are faced with mental problems that’s crippling their efforts in service delivery.
The report showed that among the four teachers seeking outpatient medical services, on is affected with mental health issues.
“The commission has noted with concern that a number of employees with mental health issues has been on the rise affecting the quality of curriculum delivery. To this end the commission has continued to liaise with its stakeholders and partners in sensitizing its employees on mental health illness. The commission has also enhanced employees’s medical schemes to facilitate better attention of mental illness related cases,” the report reads.
All teachers in Kenya are covered by the Medical service provider AoN Minet Kenya. The scheme has about 346,000 registered under the Scheme.
On top of this number, there are the secretariat staff in the commission plus the 10,000 teachers who were recently employed adding on top of those already registered.
The commission last month released a list of 36 teachers who were deregistered by the commission for various offences.
Problems Affecting Effective Teaching
Last year the commission also deregistered 44 Teachers in October and another group of 77 teachers in July.
Considering the high number of enrollment in schools due to 100% transition and emergency of new schools in the region, the commission is struggling to plug to staffing gap.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has managed to employ 11,859 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms with 6,000 teachers on internship.
Similarly, the commission employed this year about 35,000 teachers with 21,000 on internship and 10,000 on permanent and pensionable terms.
