TSC Lists 56,000 JSS Teachers For CBC Retooling Next Week

Starting next week, a total of 56,000 junior secondary school (JSS) teachers are set to undergo training in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA). The CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Nancy Macharia, commended teachers for their dedication to both CBC compliance and their regular teaching duties during the World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

However, it’s worth noting that this retooling will apply to newly employed junior secondary school teachers, not those transitioning from primary schools. In a memo dated September 26, the TSC listed teachers of various subjects, including language, science, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects, for this training.

The training sessions will take place in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and selected county venues.

The Grade 7 teacher training is scheduled from October 9th to 13th, 2023, with prior training for Master Trainers and Trainers of Trainers (TOTs). Master Trainers, drawn from various educational institutions, began their training from October 2nd to 4th at the Kenya Institute of Special Education.

These Master Trainers will then train the TOTs, which include Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), Teacher Educators (Tutors), TSC Subcounty Directors, and Ministry of Education Quality Assurance Officers.

All training sessions will be conducted in a face-to-face format. This training initiative coincides with the posting of 18,000 intern teachers to junior secondary schools by the TSC in late August and early September.

Moreover, Grade 7 learners are gearing up to start their national writing assessments in October, with tests covering various subjects from October 2nd to October 26th, 2023. These assessments include compulsory and optional subjects, such as Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Agriculture, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, CRE/IRE/HRE, Science and Technology, Kenyan Sign Language, Integrated Science, Computer Studies, Business Studies, Life Skills Education, and Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Education.
