TSC Issues Clarification On Senior Interns Applying for PnP Jobs
As mandated by Kenya’s constitution, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plays a pivotal role in overseeing various aspects of the teaching profession in the country. This includes responsibilities such as teacher registration, the recruitment process, managing promotions and transfers, and ensuring teachers receive their salaries promptly.
Recently, the CEO of TSC has been actively working to secure additional funding to address the ongoing teacher shortage issue and to promote more promotions within the teaching industry. Furthermore, the commission is strongly advocating for improved compensation packages for primary and secondary school teachers across Kenya, recognizing the importance of acknowledging their dedication and hard work.
In spite of the persistent challenges faced by teachers, there is some positive news for educators in Kenya. All teachers who began their careers as interns from 2019 onwards have now been officially confirmed as permanent and pensionable employees. This development represents a significant milestone in the profession, offering these dedicated educators job security and financial stability.

Additionally, in February of this year, TSC took proactive steps by hiring nearly 20,000 intern teachers, primarily for junior and primary schools. This hiring campaign aimed to provide crucial support for the nation’s transition to the new competency-based curriculum (CBC).
While some of the newly hired intern teachers are still in their internship roles, others have already transitioned into permanent and pensionable positions.
According to credible reports, there is a plan in motion to ensure that all the intern teachers hired in February of this year ultimately progress into permanent and pensionable positions. This change is expected to mark a significant turning point in Kenya’s teaching job landscape.
It is anticipated that before the start of the upcoming academic year, all intern teachers currently working in junior and elementary schools will receive official letters certifying their transition to long-term, pensionable positions.
These actions underscore TSC’s proactive and forward-thinking approach to securing Kenya’s educational future and safeguarding the well-being of its dedicated teaching workforce.
