TSC Issue Appointment Letters To These Teachers
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken the initiative to issue contract letters to retired teachers in the North Eastern region. This decision was prompted by the Commission’s earlier call in May for teachers who had reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.
The North Eastern region, comprising Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera counties, was facing a substantial teacher shortage as many educators were leaving the payroll. Dr. Nancy Macharia, the CEO of TSC, acknowledged the imminent challenge, emphasizing, “This mass retirement will lead to a severe teacher shortage in the region, which has already been grappling with this issue due to the recent departure of non-local teachers.”

To address this concern, the Commission has chosen to engage retired teachers from the region on a contractual basis for a three-year period. Moreover, the retirement age for teachers will be extended by an additional three years beyond the mandatory retirement age.
It’s important to note that this initiative is not limited to the North Eastern region alone. TSC is welcoming retired teachers from other parts of the country who are willing to serve in the North Eastern region. The Commission has instructed these retired teachers to get in touch with the County Directors in their respective counties for data collection and subsequent deployment.

In addition to this, TSC is in the process of recruiting intern teachers for deployment in the region. Dr. Macharia has mentioned that “The Commission is in the process of recruiting intern teachers to be posted to the region during this financial year when funds are made available by the treasury, as these engagements are in the final stages.”
