TSC Gives School Heads Upto 24th of August To Submit Details Of All Vaccinated Teachers In Their Schools

All school heads have now until the 24th of August 2021 to submit full details of vaccinated teachers in the institutions, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has said.

TSC sub-county directors have also been asked to forward all details of vaccinated teachers and officers to the TSC headquarters on daily basis.

"You are required to coordinate teachers and officers under your respective jurisdiction to get vaccinated. Provide data on those vaccinated using the attached template. Send the data on daily basis." Read a memo from TSC to all Sub-County directors.

On 16th, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) directed all teachers that are yet to be vaccinated to take advantage of the current vaccination drive to get the jab ahead of the August 23, 2021 deadline issued by the Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua.

Speaking on Monday during the Covid-19 vaccination drive in Nakuru County, TSC boss Nancy Macharia said that the commission is aiming to have all teachers vaccinated within the next 7 days.

The vaccination exercise she said is more urgent now given the new Delta variant that is the most easily transmissible variant yet

"We need the protection of the vaccine or we will lose many of our teachers. We note that our schools are now fully operational and with increased enrollment as we gear towards 100% transition." She said.

His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta allowed the Ministry of Health to open up the vaccination exercise to all teachers irrespective of their ages.

On March 11th 2021, TSC launched the Covid-19 vaccination exercise for teachers countrywide.

As of last Saturday, August 14th 2021, TSC says 178,734 teachers have been vaccinated with the first dose while 110,342 have received the full dose (1 and 2).

However, having a target to vaccinate all the 330,671 teachers on TSC payroll and thousands teaching in private schools, TSC says the number so far is still not impressive.

This is in spite of the government having prioritized and identified teachers as frontline workers together with health, police and military officers who were targeted during round one of the inoculations.

"Today, once again I am making a rallying call to all teachers; “Beat COVID-19 by Getting a Jab!” …. and I want to assure them that the quickest way for life to return to normal is for most people to get vaccinated." Said Nancy Macharia.

As of the 16th of August, a total of 549 teachers contracted the virus since it was first reported in the country. Out of this number, Macharia says 81 lives have been lost. 468 teachers have fully recovered from the virus.

"I direct all TSC regional and county directors to encourage and provide teachers with information on availability of COVID-19 vaccine and vaccination centres in their respective areas of jurisdiction." Said Macharia.

PUNISHMENT AWAITS THE DEFIANT

Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua warned that all Civil servants who will not get the Covid-19 jab before the end of August 23 will face disciplinary action.

In a recent NSAC meeting, it was reported that there was a low uptake of Covid-19 vaccines among public servants especially the security sector, teachers and the core civil service.

Kinyua says it is against a background of access to vaccines having greatly improved especially among these groups. It was also observed that some public servants have deliberately avoided getting vaccinated so that they can stay away from work under the guise of working from home.

"This has negatively affected service delivery to the public. It has therefore been decided that all civil servants will be prioritized in the ongoing vaccination exercise and that those who will not have been given the 1st jab by 23rd August 2021 be treated as discipline cases and appropriate action taken against them." Said Kinyua.

Principal Secretaries/Accounting Officers have also been instructed to ensure full implementation of this decision.

The latest consignment donated from the Greek government pushes the number of vaccines received in the country to 2,323,100.

As schools break for the mid-term holiday next week, TSC urged all teachers and learners to fully comply with the COVID-19 measures during and after the break.

"As a Commission, we have instructed our medical health insurer to ensure that all facilities that attend to our teachers are fully able to provide fast and quality services to our teachers and their dependents." Said Macharia.

TSC also issued a fresh circular directing all TSC county and sub-county directors, curriculum support officers and heads of institutions to mop up teachers and officers for the exercise.
