TSC Fires 73 Teachers Over Disciplinary Issues
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken action by terminating the employment of 73 teachers due to various disciplinary cases. This decision was communicated through a Gazette Notice published on a Friday.
Nancy Macharia, the CEO of the teachers’ employer, listed the names of the dismissed teachers, along with their respective TSC numbers, disciplinary case numbers, and dates of removal.
According to Macharia, those individuals listed in the notice will no longer be allowed to work as teachers, effective from the date of their removal. Notably, ten of the dismissed teachers were also removed from the Board of Management (BOM).
The TSC has made it clear that these teachers are prohibited from engaging in teaching services unless they are registered under the Teachers Act. This restriction means they cannot participate in teaching activities in any school, as specified in the Code of Regulations for Teachers.
The Act states, “A person shall not engage in the teaching service unless such a person is registered as a teacher under this Act.” Furthermore, once a teacher’s name is removed from the register under this Act, it cannot be reinstated unless directed by the Commission.

Macharia has issued a warning to schools against employing unregistered teachers, cautioning that failure to comply may lead to penalties, including a fine of not less than Ksh100,000 or a two-year jail term, or both.
The TSC has also outlined the termination procedures for teachers’ appointments. For permanent and pensionable appointments, the Commission must provide a three-month notice in writing or pay a one-month basic salary in lieu of the notice. In the case of temporary appointments, National Social Security Fund (NSSF) benefits are administered in accordance with the NSSF Act Cap 258.
Additionally, male teachers who contributed to the Widows and Children’s Pension Scheme (WCPS) are eligible for a refund of their contributions under specific circumstances.
