TSC Extends Deadline for Internship Application
The Teachers Service Commission has found that North Eastern counties’ eligible unemployed teachers have been avoiding the region’s teaching opportunities.
In her testimony on Tuesday before the National Assembly Education Committee, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia stated that the Commission advertised 36,000 posts in December 2022 and hired 35,790 candidates.
In contrast, there are still 210 available positions for intern teachers in the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa since there aren’t enough applications.
She stated that there are still 174 vacancies open in the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa.Although the 210 positions were re-advertised in May 2023, no candidates from the three regions applied, according to Macharia.
Because of employment insecurity and subpar working conditions, teachers are unwilling to accept internship positions in some locations, claims Macharia.
Numerous terrorist attacks have targeted the North Eastern region over the years, killing several teachers and igniting debate over the delocalization strategy in the process.
The MPs declared they will call Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to discuss the issue of insecurity in the North Eastern region.

As a committee, we must be prepared to handle this scenario because of its importance. We must summon the CS for internal security in order to address the issue of insecurity in North Eastern and ensure that teachers are safeguarded, the committee decided.
The Ministry of Internal Security might depress people, especially our educators, on the topic of insecurity since TSC could not have a way out.
Macharia emphasised that the Commission has made an effort to maintain teachers in their preferred subcounty when vacancies occur in order to reduce relocation costs to address the issue.Everyone who wishes to apply is invited to do so, the CEO emphasised.
However, “The Commission has been extending deadlines on affirmative action as well as re-advertising the positions numerous times,” Macharia added, in an effort to attract applications from the region.

All applicants for North Eastern must meet certain conditions, including agreeing to serve a three-year term.
In order to further address the teacher shortage in junior secondary schools, the Commission identified and allocated 8, 367 qualified primary school teachers to those institutions.
Macharia stated that teachers who get the necessary certifications are welcome to apply and be deployed continually and that the application portal for JSS deployment is still open.
