TSC CEO Put to Task to Explain How Sh6.4 Billion was Used In Recruitment

TSC Explanation on Sh6.4 billion Teacher Recruitment

Machakos County Woman Rep Joyce Kamene has requested that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) provide details on how the Sh6.4 billion allocated in Supplementary Budget I of the 2022/23 Financial Year was utilized for teacher recruitment.

She specifically wants TSC to disclose the number of teachers recruited by gender, county, and Persons With Disabilities, and to elaborate on the prospects of the 26,000 individuals engaged as teacher interns securing employment.

Additionally, Kamene is seeking information on TSC’s contingency plans to safeguard the livelihoods of the interns once their internship contracts expire. She has called for TSC to outline its action plan to ensure fairness and equity in future teacher recruitment exercises and the adequate deployment of teachers in special needs schools nationwide.

Kamene has also asked TSC to explain the monitoring and evaluation tools currently in use to assess the effectiveness of the training provided to teachers and school administrators in the competency-based curriculum. This request is made in consideration of the challenges faced by parents who find themselves assisting their children with homework.

It’s worth noting that education stakeholders have expressed concerns about political interference in the teacher recruitment process, with allegations of harassment and intimidation of TSC staff by politicians.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) have called for fairness and transparency in the recruitment and hiring of new teachers.
