TSC CEO Nancy Macharia’s Tenure to End Soon

An activist has taken legal action to compel Dr. Nancy Macharia, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), to resign. The activist, Francis Owino, argues that Dr. Macharia’s tenure as CEO expired in February 2023 due to her age.

According to the complaint filed before High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi, Owino is requesting the court to declare that Dr. Nancy Macharia’s continued leadership of TSC is illegal as she has reached the retirement age. Dr. Macharia’s initial term was supposed to conclude in February of this year.

The activist claims that Dr. Macharia’s contract as CEO of the commission was renewed for another five years in July 2020. She took over the position from Gabriel Lengoibon in 2015 after a competitive recruitment process.

Owino argues that according to his petition, Dr. Macharia’s term should have ended in February 2023, and any extension beyond that was unlawful. He has also involved the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the teachers’ employer in this matter.

Owino points out that on February 16 of this year, Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa of the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative Affairs canceled all applications for term extensions for public civil workers over the age of 60. As a result, he is seeking an order to prevent Dr. Macharia from continuing to lead TSC.
