Manchester United relied on David de Gea as their primary goalkeeper for over a decade before his departure as a free agent ahead of last season. To fill the void, the club made a significant investment in Andre Onana, acquiring him from Inter Milan. However, his performance has been inconsistent.
Over 27 Premier League matches, Onana has managed only seven clean sheets, with a save percentage of 65%. Additionally, he has made three errors that directly resulted in goals. His overall performances have failed to gain the confidence of United supporters, raising concerns about his long-term viability as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
United’s Interest in Mike Maignan
According to reports from Italian outlet Milan Live, Manchester United are considering replacing Onana and have set their sights on AC Milan’s Mike Maignan. The French international has just 16 months remaining on his current contract, and negotiations for an extension with the Rossoneri have yet to make progress. As a result, he is expected to leave San Siro at the conclusion of this season.
Currently earning approximately £57,000 per week with Milan, agreeing on personal terms should not be a challenge for the Red Devils. This financial feasibility makes Maignan an attractive option for the club as they seek to strengthen their goalkeeping department.
Maignan’s Performance and Achievements
Since arriving from LOSC Lille, the 29-year-old has played a crucial role in AC Milan’s success, helping them secure a Scudetto title and a Supercoppa Italiana trophy. Despite his past achievements, this season has been challenging for him, as he has committed three errors leading to goals and conceded a penalty.
Nevertheless, Maignan has still managed to keep 10 clean sheets in 27 Serie A appearances, boasting a 70% save rate. These numbers indicate his ability to perform at a high level, despite some inconsistencies.

The Need for Competition
