Teachers will receive the majority of the pay increase for civil officials, which will be retroactive to July 1, which is a relief for those who have fought for a rise for the past two years.
A wage increase of 7–10% for civil officials was announced by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) yesterday.
The highest-paid teacher in grade D5 would make at least Ksh173, 422 under the planned salary increase for teachers after the Government’s proposal, assuming a 10% increase.
In the event of a 7% rise, grade D5 teachers will therefore earn Ksh140, 577 as opposed to Ksh131, 380 as their base pay.
In the event of a 7% increase, the existing basic pay for D4 will increase to a minimum of Ksh126, 519.
Additionally, there will be a rise from Ksh141, 891 to a maximum of Ksh156, 080 if the 10% increase is applied.
The minimum pay for Grade D3 will increase from Ksh104,644 to Ksh111,969, and it will increase by 10% from Ksh125,573 to Ksh138,130.
The lowest-paid teacher in grade B5 will also experience an increase, going from their current salary of Ksh21,756 to a minimum of Ksh23,279 if just 7% of the population is affected, and from their current salary of Ksh27,195 to a maximum of Ksh29,915 if 10% is implemented.

According to SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich, the study aims to harmonise compensation and benefits across the public sector while adhering to the principles of affordability and fiscal sustainability.
“SRC worked with the National Treasury on funding in accordance with the constitutional principles of affordability and fiscal sustainability. “Within a budget allocation of Sh27.7 billion for the year 2023–2024, the National Treasury advised SRC to consider reviewing the compensation structure,” said Mengich in Nairobi yesterday.
According to the current proposal, the teaching service will receive Sh9.5 billion, or 44.2%, of the total amount of Sh21.7 billion.
