Some months ago over 43,000 teachers employed by the Board of Management (BOM)cheered when the state through His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that all BOM teachers be paid a substantial amount of money to cushion them from the Covid-19 effects.
The Education Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Zack Kinuthia later announced that the state was to disburse Sh1.72 billion lump sum to cover the teachers’ salary for the proceeding four months until December next month.
“This is a promise from the office of the CAS through consultation that the money is safely on transit to their bank accounts. It will happen whether it is today, tomorrow or Friday,” said Kinuthia.
Each BOM teacher was to receive Sh40,000 in total for the 4 months which meant that teachers would part with Sh10000 monthly payment. The money was later confirmed to have been channelled to the teachers’ respective bank accounts.
“This is a promise from the office of the CAS through consultation that the money is safely on transit to their bank accounts. It will happen whether it is today, tomorrow or Friday,” said Kinuthia.
Later on, the funds were released to the schools and teachers got paid as announced by the Cabinet Secretary for Education Professor George Magoha.
About the Unpaid BoM teachers
But then, a good number of BoM teachers have come out expressing their grievances saying that they never received money released by the government to Cushion them.
Despite these teachers having been registered bt the Teachers Service Commission and having been in service before the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, it is vivid that they haven’t received their Salaries for all this period.
Some say their principals ignore them when they try to question about the payments.
“Good afternoon, some BOM teachers have not been paid, it been hard for real without payment for 7 months yet no communication from the principal.” A BOM teacher from Siaya County told Teachers Updates.
“Some schools claim not to have gotten the money yet. I’m not aware why?” Another teacher from Kwale County, Matuga Sub-County also confirmed not to have been paid despite being a bonafide BOM teacher at the institution.
This comes even as BOM teachers in some schools have been asked by their school heads to remain at home till January despite having taught candidates before schools were closed.
Many of the BoM teachers who have been negativity hit by the Covid-19 pandemic have decided to work in construction sites and mining firms just to feed their families and pay bills.
Who is playing who?
Education Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Zack Kinuthia established that money had been discharged into all School accounts and all bonafide BoM teachers should have profited from it by receiving Kshs.10,000 each month.
As per now, the big question is Where did the money allocated for some schools go? Are the School Principals not ready to release the Cash or is it that the CAS was Pranking us all through?
Did the government release enough money to cushion all bonafide BOM teachers, or was it just a statement to ease the situation at that time?
Kessha Chairman’s Response
Meanwhile, the BoM teachers have been trying to air their grievances to the KESSHA Chairman Indimuli Kahi. In one of the Social Media platforms, the KESHA chairman said that he had discussed with the Director of Secondary Education concerning the schools that didn’t receive the funds and that the funds will be availed to the Schools over the coming weekend.
“Good morning all, I had a consultation with Director Secondary, and he confirmed that for those schools that missed out on payment of BOM Teachers, money should be credited to the school accounts by the weekend. Thank you and let’s wait for the funds to credited.”
In another message in the social media platform, Indimuli has come out saying that Some BoM teachers reaching out to him are being disrespectful by Abusing him.
