In a notable development, the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has introduced an innovative pay system and career trajectory for teachers entering the field in primary and middle schools.

This groundbreaking effort seeks to recognize and incentivize the commitment of teachers in grades 7, 8, and 9, who are implementing an engaging competency-centered curriculum to shape the intellectual growth of the upcoming generation.

Acknowledging the pivotal role educators hold in molding young intellects, the TSC has brought together a team of experts dedicated to fostering lower-secondary education. In conjunction with this decision, the commission has unveiled an appealing salary structure intended to appreciate and motivate the endeavors of these dedicated teachers.

This initiative also creates opportunities for primary school teachers who seek advancement following the esteemed Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).

The TSC presents a distinct chance for these teachers to transition to the captivating realm of junior high schools. Here, they will mentor and guide students in grades 7, 8, and 9, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of learning.

Notably, P1 teachers will oversee junior high school students, as detailed in the Status Report on Teacher Readiness for the Progressive Competence-Based Curriculum Implementation. These teachers are expected to possess a bachelor’s degree in education or higher, underscoring the TSC’s dedication to providing a high-quality educational experience.

For teachers aspiring to embark on this exciting journey, specific criteria must be met. Only those holding at least a Bachelor’s degree in Education (with a specialization in Secondary education) and attaining a minimum of C+ in the KCSE exams are eligible to partake in this honorable endeavor.

Chosen educators will start at the esteemed C2 level, enjoying a monthly salary ranging from sh 34,955 to sh 43,694. After three years of devoted service, they will advance to the C3 level.

Teachers in the C3 grade receive a basic monthly pay ranging from sh 43,154 to sh 53,943. Additionally, they enjoy various benefits such as a daily transportation allowance of sh 5,000, a housing allowance of sh 7,500 for those residing outside major cities, an annual leave allowance of sh 6,000, and a resilience payment of sh 10,900 for teachers in high-risk areas. These perks collectively make the compensation package appealing and advantageous.

In conclusion, the TSC’s novel salary structure and career path for junior secondary school teachers herald a transformative era in education. This move not only acknowledges the pivotal role educators play in shaping young minds but also seeks to attract and retain committed teaching professionals. With a focus on competence-based learning and equitable remuneration, this initiative holds the promise of a brighter future for both teachers and students alike.
