Teachers To Teach for 6 Hours Only, CS Machogu Says
Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, has urged headteachers to make sure that classes in primary and secondary schools only last six hours on weekdays.
According to Machogu, classes should begin at 8:00 am and end at 3:45 pm. He argued that instruction should be organic and not coerced.
“Despite having a 3-hour teaching day, Finland is known for having a top-notch educational system. According to Machogu, schools must stick to the set school hours so that students can manage their learning and participate in physical education activities.
The CS spoke on Thursday at a meeting with Indimuli Kahi, the chairman of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association, at his office in Jogoo House.
He expressed his gratitude to KESSHA for helping the government administer education, and in particular for supporting the government’s efforts to reform education.
Kahi brought up a number of concerns he wants the Ministry to deal with in order to make it simpler for principals to run secondary schools.
Some of the concerns the association wants the ministry to address include capitation payments for free day secondary education programmes, school clothing, the distribution of curriculum materials, the administration of co-curricular activities, and the auditing of school finances.
According to Machogu, the ministry would assemble a committee to investigate the problems and offer remedies.
But he urged the group to offer ideas for potential solutions to the problems.
Principal Secretary for Basic Education Belio Kipsang urged KESSHA’s leadership to control the price of school uniforms for its members.
Senior Ministry officials and KESSHA executive executives were among the other leaders present at the meeting.
