Teachers to get Salary Increments as TSC Push For Approval
Starting July 2023, teachers on permanent and pensionable terms will receive their salary increments from the Teachers Service Commission, TSC.
The commission is seeking Sh54 billion from the treasury that will see even those teachers in lower grades receive annual increments.
If the treasury will approve these money, administrators in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands will receive promotions that will see their salary increase.
Who will receive Increments
Despite the fact that the commission only rewards teachers who have moved ranks, it has assured all teachers salary increments if the treasury approves the Sh54 billion.
Furthermore, the commission has also assured the Teachers’ Unions that it will review the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), 2021-2025 if parliament approves its plan.
Nancy Macharia, the TSC CEO has mentioned that the unions had signed a non-monetary agreement that now needs serious review.
“The commission negotiated a non-monetary 2021-2023 CBA with the teachers Unions pursuant to the advisory from the salaries review commission. It was agreed that the CBA be reviewed mid-term if the economic situation would improve in the country,” Dr. Macharia told member of the National Assembly Education and research committee chaired by Julius Melly.
“The commission would wish to review the 2021-2025 CBA, more specifically the salary component to motivate teachers under the employment of the commission,” she added.
“Accordingly, we request this committee to support the commission get Sh14 billion per year for four years to cater for the same,” Macharia added.
Nonetheless, teachers in the lowest job group, B5 will receive their salary increments gradually until they reach the par at Sh27,195.
The same will apply to all other teachers in other job groups that will see them also receive salary increments.
Initially, the Teachers Service Commission TSC would just award teachers salary increments based on the month they were deployed in their stations.
Those teachers who have not yet reached their maximum salary according to their job groups, will still receive the increment.
20,000 Teacher To be Employed
The CEO further mentioned that they will employ 20,000 teachers in the new financial year that will be posted to Junior Secondary School to curb the shortage.
Similarly, she has urged the parliamentary committee to allocate the commission Sh3.8 billion to aid in recruitment in the next budget in June.
Lastly, the announcement has been made by the commission after they recruited over 30,000 teachers who were posted to junior secondary.
Its sad that the teachers majority of them have not been paid yet for three months now.
But the commission and the Ministry Of Education (MoE) through the CS they have urged these teachers to exercise patience as they will be paid this month.
