Teachers to Get Payrise as TSC, Unions Agree
The two major teachers’ unions and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have come to an agreement to raise teachers’ salaries by 7 to 10 percent.
This salary increase is part of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and aligns with a proposal from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to boost the pay of all State employees.
TSC announced on Monday that, following successful negotiations with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET), the pay raise for tutors will be effective starting from August.
Additionally, an addendum to the 2021/2025 CBA has been agreed upon and signed. This addendum aims to protect teachers from new statutory deductions and the high cost of living.
In recent talks held at the Kenya School of Government, the unions and TSC leadership discussed the salary increase proposal. However, KUPPET, KNUT, and KUSNET rejected TSC’s offer of 2.4 to 9.5 percent, deeming it insufficient.
They asserted that the raise fell short of the seven to ten percent increase recommended by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for all civil servants, including teachers and security forces.
After multiple negotiations, the resolution has now been achieved. Besides the salary increment, the unions have agreed to implement ongoing promotions for teachers, starting with the 36,000 posts that have already been advertised nationwide.
Additionally, house allowance harmonization with Nairobi rates will be initiated to ensure fair allowances for teachers across the country. Teachers in specific clusters and areas will receive increased house allowances.
Teachers Training Colleges (TTC) instructors have been given priority in promotion vacancies and will not compete with secondary teachers for TTC positions.
