Teachers to be held responsible for school Unrest. Magoha Issues A Stern Warning.

The Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha has said that school principals and teachers on duty will be held responsible for incidents of students unrest.

He said teachers have the capacity of preventing such incidents from happening. He gave a stern warning to students that those found guilty will face the full force of the law.

The CS said the government is concerned about the surge of school fires that have destroyed properties worth millions of shillings. So far 25 public secondary schools have been razed down in an ugly situation.

Magoha who had suggested the reintroduction of corporal punishment has faced opposition from human rights organisations and teachers unions.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has recommended the phasing out o boarding schools as a means of dealing with cases of school unrest in schools.

“How do you cane a teenager who has been free out there? Control of children requires parenting, and that is why we are suggesting very strongly. Kenya is mature to eliminate all boarding schools so that children can go home and come back.” Said KNUT Secretary-General Sossion.

To curb the unrest, the National Education Committee recommends regular drug tests, reduction of boarding schools to allow parents have enough time with their children, timely release of school capitation and guidance and counselling in schools.
