Teachers across Kenya are voicing their concerns about the leadership and governance of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT). The Rongo KNUT chapter in Migori County urgently submitted a petition to the Senate, highlighting several issues that have sparked grave worries among educators and citizens alike.

One key issue is the alleged arbitrary changes to the KNUT constitution, raising questions about the legitimacy of the union’s actions and decisions. Moreover, officials in various branches have been suspended, adding to the unrest within the union.

One of the contentious points is the composition of teacher representatives within KNUT. Allegedly, there is inconsistent representation of teachers, with a significant number of retired teachers holding positions. This contradicts the definition of an “active teacher” provided by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The petition also raises concerns about the deregistration of retired teachers from the payroll, potentially leading to financial irregularities. Unfair election criteria have been pointed out, as requiring candidates for national office seats to be among the top four branch members is seen as unjust.

Transparency issues are further highlighted in the petition, with claims that decisions made by KNUT delegates are not accurately reflected in the minutes and resolutions filed with the registrar of society. There are also calls for more transparency in the retirement ages of KNUT officials, particularly those protected by Secretary General Collins Henry Oyuu.

The petitioner questions the merging of branches, arguing that it contradicts the principles of devolution and equitable service delivery. Financial decisions have come under scrutiny, with suggestions that the National Executive Council (NEC) should have a more active role in fund allocation rather than solely relying on numerical strength.

The core of the petition emphasizes that KNUT should primarily represent working teachers, not retired ones, and advocates for adherence to set rules and regulations in the management of the organization.

Allegations of economic mismanagement have been raised, citing differences between KNUT records and TSC data regarding retired officials. Furthermore, the petition alleges that Secretary General Collins Henry Oyuu has used personal connections to influence branch activities, including selective replacement of officials.

The petitioner’s appeal to the Senate underscores the importance of safeguarding teacher welfare and upholding the rule of law within KNUT’s management. These claims highlight the need for transparency, responsibility, and adherence to the set rules for an organization that plays a pivotal role in protecting the interests of teachers across Kenya.
