Teachers Pension Processing To Be Moved From Treasury To TSC
In a recent development, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is advocating for a significant change in the management of teachers’ retirement benefits.
Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of KNUT, expressed his concerns during an event at Kitui Teachers Training College. The primary issue revolves around the frustration experienced by educators due to corruption and delays within the current payment system, overseen by the Pensions Director under the National Treasury.
Oyuu highlighted the paradox of the current process. Teachers, who have devoted 35 years of their lives to service and received their salaries from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), are directed to the National Treasury upon retirement, an entity that lacks familiarity with individual teachers.
To address this issue, the union has presented a proposal, seeking the support of the Kenyan Parliament. Dr. Nancy Macharia, the CEO of TSC, previously held the National Treasury responsible for pension payment delays, emphasizing that TSC ensures timely paperwork completion, which is then forwarded to the Director of Pensions.
During a session with the Senate committee, Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary for Education, encouraged TSC to streamline the pension processing procedure.

Collins Oyuu stressed the need for transparency in various areas, including the Provident Fund, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), and Contributory Pension Scheme. He also opposed what he viewed as a ‘covert’ delocalization of teachers and demanded fair treatment for educators from certain entities.
While expressing their support for educational sector reform initiatives, Oyuu emphasized KNUT’s authority over teachers and urged other unions to respect their jurisdiction.
The push to transfer pension processing to TSC has gained momentum due to the challenges faced by teachers and disparities in the pension system, prompting a reevaluation to establish a more efficient and secure process for safeguarding teachers’ retirement benefits.
