Teachers Deny Move to Offer Sick Candidates Exams After Recovery

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has expressed its support for a proposal that would allow sick candidates to defer their national exams until they have fully recovered. This proposal was put forward by Julius Melly, the Education Committee chairman of the National Assembly.

During his visit to Mitihani House in Nairobi, Melly argued that it would be unfair to burden ailing students with exams. He suggested that candidates undergoing medical treatment could be given supplementary exams once they have recuperated.

“We need to come up with a better solution. You cannot give exams to a sick person in the hospital; we are looking for solutions to cope with this situation,” stated Melly.

He emphasized the inappropriateness of subjecting exams to someone who has been unwell for an extended period, especially those recovering from surgery and still on medication.

Opollo K’Opollo, chairman of KUPPET Kilifi branch, further highlighted that many students who become ill during exams struggle to complete their assessments while hospitalized. He urged the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to make efforts to ensure timely delivery of examinations to candidates, especially given the expected El Nino rains in October.

This year is notable for the administration of three national exams: the Kenya Primary School Assessment (KPSEA) for Grade 6 learners, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

KCPE and KPSEA examination candidates are scheduled for a rehearsal on Friday, October 27. The three-day exams will run concurrently, starting on Monday, October 30, and concluding on Wednesday, November 1, paving the way for the KCSE exams scheduled from November 2 to 24th.
