Teacher Recruitment Exercise Now Taken Over by UDA Politicians, Kaluma
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) holds the sole responsibility for the recruitment of teachers in our country.
In recent months, a concerning trend has emerged where politicians have taken it upon themselves to distribute TSC employment letters at public events, such as funerals. Notably, about a month ago, the Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, handed out a TSC employment letter to a qualified teacher during the funeral service of Nyamaiya Ward MCA at Getaari Secondary School. Unfortunately, similar incidents have been reported elsewhere.
Today, Homa Bay town’s Member of Parliament, the Honorable Peter Kaluma, has expressed his dissatisfaction with this situation. He has called for a fair and transparent TSC employment process that truly reflects the diversity of the Kenyan population.
He raised a valid concern that politicians seem to have encroached upon the TSC’s responsibilities, essentially sidelining this independent institution.
In his words, “The teacher recruitment process has been co-opted by politicians from the United Democratic Alliance, leaving the TSC on the sidelines when it should be the agency primarily responsible for this task.” His lament is well-founded.

I wholeheartedly agree with Honorable Peter Kaluma’s stance on this matter. The TSC is designed to function independently, and it deserves the freedom to carry out its crucial duty of teacher recruitment without external interference.
It’s important to remember that the actions of politicians in this regard have far-reaching consequences, especially for teachers who have been waiting for employment, some for an extended period. This interference has the potential to disadvantage many qualified educators, including those who graduated some time ago.
In light of these circumstances, maintaining the integrity of the TSC’s recruitment process is paramount to ensure fairness and equal opportunities for all aspiring teachers in Kenya.
