A teacher attached to Kianjeru Primary School in Tharaka Nithi County has died while travelling alongside his students after a school bus, rolled several times before landing in a ditch.
10 students from Ibiriga Day Secondary School who had been given a free ride to their institution also sustained injuries and were taken to Chuka County Referral Hospital for treatment.
It is reported that the school driver lost control along the Meru-Nairobi highway early in the morning leading to the accident.
Tharaka Nithi County Emergency Response Team Coordinator Alex Mugambi confirmed the incident with a witness saying there was no overspeeding but the bus veered off the highway due to the poor slippery nature of the road.
In the latest available data by Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna, 710 people lost their lives on the roads in January and February 2021 as compared to the same period last year which recorded 562 deaths.
“Comparing the numbers of road accident cases between January and February, 2020 and the same period in 2021, there is an increase of 148 cases,” stated Oguna during a past press briefing.
Oguna highlighted Road rage, overlapping, reckless driving and dangerous overtaking among factors contributing to increasing road carnage.
Other issues were drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding and failure to use helmets.
