Tana River County In Dire Need for More Teachers, Illiteracy so high

The Department of Adult Education in Tana River County is grappling with a severe shortage of adult education teachers, leading to a rise in cases of illiteracy within the region.

During the commemoration of International Literacy Day at Shikaadabu Primary School in Chelewe, Tana North Sub County, Robert Zoka, the County Adult Education Officer, addressed the audience. He disclosed that there was a total of 2,221 adult learners, comprising 523 males and 1,698 females in the area.

Zoka highlighted that despite having 100 learning centers, some students were forced to learn under trees due to insufficient facilities. To address this issue, seven full-time teachers were complemented by 43 part-time teachers whose compensation came from NGOs, religious organizations, and well-wishers.

He emphasized the need for the national government to hire more full-time teachers to adequately staff these learning centers. This, he believed, would help retain students, enhance the educational standards of adult learners, and curtail the prevalence of illiteracy in the county.

During the same gathering, Samuel Mwangi, the Tana North Sub County Deputy County Commissioner, called upon parents to ensure that all school-aged children have access to education as a means to combat illiteracy and poverty in the region.

Mwangi also urged local chiefs and assistant chiefs to remain vigilant about suspicious individuals from neighboring counties who might be planning to disrupt the peace in the area. He stressed the importance of reporting such individuals to the police for appropriate action, underscoring that only through peace and security could development projects prosper in the region.
