Students Taken To School By The Government In The Mop-Up Exercise Sent Back Home For Fees

Parents are calling on the ministry to provide a clear framework on the payment of school fees for students enrolled on form 1 through the now-famous mop-up exercise.

In about 1.17 million students who sat the 2020 KCPE exams, close to 117,000 of them failed to join from one thereafter, with various players questioning whether there was adequate infrastructure in secondary schools to admit the ballooned numbers.

The Kenyan government 100 transition policy from primary to secondary school has been attracting applause and critique in equal measure.

However, lack of school fees is threatening the effectiveness of the 100 transition policy as some of the students taken to school by government officials have been sent away due to fees arrears.

The ministry of education launched the Elimu scholarship in 2020 to fortify the existing scholarships and bursaries to ensure students from needy backgrounds have a shot at education in 2021. The second cohort of 9 000 beneficiaries was selected. 




Even as the education ministry issued a stunning warning to parents who are yet to register their children into form one, the ministry must address the school fee issue as it seeks to maintain the 100 per cent transition

policy.
