Students Invent An Automated Anti-Theft System For Farms

In Summary

  • The security system uses GSM technology, and guards against theft of livestock, farm produce tools and equipment.
  • The anti-theft system additionally has an outer door locking system that uses motors connected to the door. If a thief successfully accesses a store at the farm, he cannot escape through the door.
  • The system costs between Sh1,800 and Sh25,000.

Sigalagala National Training Institute students have invented an automated anti-theft wireless sensor system precisely meant for use in farms and ranches.

Clinton Kibisu, a second-year IT student, tells the security system employs GSM technology, and guards against theft of livestock, farm produce tools and equipment.

"The automated anti-theft sensor system notifies the owner when there is an intruder in the farm or store since it is fitted with motion detectors and sensors, a message is then sent to the mobile phone of the owner," Kibisu explains.

According to the students, the system is programmed using Arduino C++, a little of Java and a database to store the data. "Its simple design enables the farmer to use this wireless home security system from wherever he is.” The students explained.

The system is fully controlled by the micro-controller which constantly observes all the sensors, and if it senses a security threat, the micro-controller conveys a message to the user’s mobile phone through GSM modem.

The anti-theft system additionally has an outer door locking system that uses motors connected to the door. If a thief succeeds to enter a store at the farm, he cannot escape via the door.

In such a situation, a wired switch is provided to enable or disable the motor-driven door lock system, which can be improvised by using wireless control on the motor-driven door locking system.

The system is affordable as it costs between Ksh1,800 and Ksh25,000.
