Step-by-Step Guide on Maternity Leave Application

In Kenya, teachers expecting a child have the right to maternity leave, which is crucial for the well-being of both the mother and the newborn.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to complete and submit the TSC Maternity Leave Application:

1. Eligibility and Duration: Female teachers are entitled to 90 calendar days of maternity leave from the date of confinement, separate from annual leave. Male teachers can apply for up to 10 days of paternity leave during their spouse’s maternity leave.

2. Application Submission: Submit your maternity leave application at least one month before the leave is due. You should send it through your head of institution to the District Education Officer (DEO), Ministry of Education Officer (MEO), or County Education Officer (DCE). Make sure to include supporting medical documents.

3. Paternity Leave: Male teachers can apply for paternity leave within the period of their spouse’s maternity leave. If a teacher has multiple wives, leave is granted based on the spouse listed on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Card.

4. Obtain the Application Form: Get the Maternity Leave Application Form from the TSC website or through other available sources. This form needs to be completed in triplicate.

5. Complete Part I: In Part I of the application form, provide your full name (Mrs. or Miss), TSC Number, spouse’s name, expected start date of maternity leave, and sign and date the application.

6. Medical Examination: Schedule a medical examination with a qualified medical practitioner who will complete Part II of the form. The medical officer will provide a certificate confirming your pregnancy and the expected date of confinement. Ensure the certificate is stamped, signed, and dated.

7. Submit the Application: Submit the completed application in triplicate to your school’s principal or headteacher. Ensure it’s done at least one month before your scheduled maternity leave.

8. Wait for Approval: Your school’s principal or headteacher will review your application and forward it to the TSC County Director for approval. Approval may take some time, so apply well in advance.

9. Maternity Leave Period: If your application is approved, you’ll have a three-month maternity leave period, starting from the date specified in your application and medical certificate.

Important Notes

– Teachers applying for maternity leave cannot take annual leave in the same year.

– Ensure you submit a birth notification before resuming work after your maternity leave.

This process ensures that teachers receive the necessary support during maternity and that their leave is managed appropriately.
