Standard 8 Pupil Commits Suicide Over 20 Shillings

Residents of Adungosi village, Busia County, are in grieving after a Standard eight pupil’s body was found in a garden on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.

The pupil who was expected to sit for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination is said to have ended his life after he was purportedly accused of stealing Ksh20.

Locals gathered at the scene of the incident wearing grieved faces.

The occurrence adds to a disturbing trend of suicides among learners in Kenya over recent years. Reports by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that at least 800,000 people globally commit suicide annually.

Surprisingly, suicide has been singled out as the 2nd leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds.

While incidents of suicide are poorly documented in the country,

the upsurge in the coverage of suicide-related deaths is a crucial indicator of the necessity with which means ought to be deployed to decrease these otherwise preventable deaths.
