Sossion Sends Message to All Teachers Across the Country

Former KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion has provided reassurance to teachers, asserting that KNUT’s leadership is secure under President William Ruto’s administration due to Ruto’s respect for education and trade unions.

Sossion, speaking from his insider perspective, noted that previous attempts by various leaders, including those from the opposition, to engage with the former regime had been unsuccessful. Drawing an analogy to the biblical story of Joseph, he expressed confidence that teachers are now in a more advantageous and protected position.

During election preparations, a comprehensive education charter was developed, and Sossion disclosed that most of its provisions have been successfully implemented. He highlighted President Ruto’s unwavering commitment to education, leading to the termination of delocalization through the president’s signature alone.

Additionally, Teacher Professional Development (TPD) costs have been assumed by the government, with training conducted at the Kenya School of Government.

Sossion further revealed that President Ruto’s dedication was evident during the charter’s signing, a commitment that has resulted in the employment of approximately 56,000 teachers across the country.

Under Ruto’s leadership, pressing concerns related to the competency-based curriculum (CBC) have been effectively addressed through a robust presidential working party dedicated to educational reforms.

Sossion pointed out that issues surrounding the placement of grades 7, 8, and 9 have been resolved, ensuring these grades remain within the primary school system. This initiative has not only improved the quality of primary education but also led to the renaming of these institutions as comprehensive schools covering grades 1 to 9.

Sossion highlighted a significant advancement in the university funding model, wherein students from disadvantaged backgrounds will now receive full scholarships and loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). This funding has seen a notable increase from Sh. 13 billion to Sh. 30 billion.

In the context of educators’ career progression, Sossion affirmed that promotions will now be based on merit, signifying a positive direction for the education sector.

These statements were made by the former KNUT secretary general during the funeral of Benson Kithuku, a retired teacher and unionist. Sossion fondly remembered Kithuku as a personal friend who introduced him to KNUT, praising him as a successful national leader. He proposed the possibility of naming an educational institution after Kithuku in recognition of his contributions.

The event also saw speeches from other leaders, including Makueni County governor Mutula Kilonzo, who lauded Kithuku’s commitment to development. KNUT deputy national treasurer Muuo Ndiku extended congratulations for the educational reforms, appreciating the positive recommendations put forth by the presidential party.

Regarding teacher interns, Ndiku advocated for their limited service to six months, followed by permanent employment without further interviews. He also advocated for the transfer of ECDE (Early Childhood Development Education) to the national government, enabling these educators to be employed by the TSC (Teachers Service Commission) under equitable salary conditions.
