There is renewed hope for senior interns following a recent statement made by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The TSC, entrusted with significant responsibilities in the Kenyan education sector by the constitution, plays a pivotal role in overseeing various aspects of the teaching profession in the country.

This encompasses duties such as teacher registration, recruitment, promotion, rotation management, and the timely disbursement of salaries.

The leaders of TSC have been diligently working to secure additional funding to address the escalating shortage of teachers and to create more career advancement opportunities within the teaching field. Their commitment extends to advocating for increased salaries for primary and secondary school teachers in Kenya, as a testament to their dedication and hard work.

A positive development for Kenyan teachers is the legal certification of all teachers who commenced their careers as trainees as permanent pensionable employees since 2019. This significant step substantially enhances the job security and financial stability of these dedicated educators.

Additionally, in February of this year, TSC initiated a recruitment campaign, bringing together approximately 20,000 trainee teachers, particularly in primary and secondary schools. The primary objective of this initiative is to provide vital support for the country’s transition to the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Although some of these newly hired teachers are currently on probation, plans are in motion to ensure that all trainee teachers hired in February will eventually secure permanent positions with pension benefits. This transformation is expected to exert a profound influence on the teaching job market in Kenya.

Before the commencement of the 2024 school year, all trainee teachers presently working in primary and secondary schools as Senior Interns will receive official confirmation of their transition to permanent pensionable positions, effectively replacing the existing teachers.

TSC’s proactive and forward-thinking approach to securing Kenya’s educational future and ensuring the well-being of its dedicated teaching staff is unmistakably evident through these initiatives.

The prospects for senior interns have brightened, thanks to TSC’s recent pronouncements on this matter.
