Over 20 individuals are currently in police custody in connection with allegations of exam malpractice during the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. Among those apprehended are five teachers in Kuria Migori County, while the principal of Nyambaria Boys School has been interdicted over accusations of exam cheating.

Nyambaria Boys School garnered significant attention for its outstanding performance in the 2022 KCSE results. In that year, even the lowest-scoring student in the class achieved a B grade, and an impressive 383 students secured an A-minus. However, discussions about the school’s results have intensified following the suspension of its principal over alleged exam malpractice.

Addressing the issue, Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang emphasized the importance of upholding integrity in the administration of national exams. Speaking on Monday at the Westland Sub-County containers where exam materials were being distributed, Kipsang expressed concern about the high investments made to protect exam integrity, emphasizing the need to build trust among the Kenyan people.

“The trust deficit is killing all of us. As a country, we should not continue this way,” stated the PS, highlighting the importance of self-policing and the early hours spent on exam-related activities.

In a separate incident, 29 mobile phones were confiscated at a school in Dadaab, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) team in Garissa investigating exam irregularities. The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations commenced nationwide, with reports of invigilators failing to properly frisk candidates. Notably, seven candidates in Baringo sat for the KCSE exams after recently delivering babies. Senior government officials are actively supervising the start of the exams across the country.
