Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has reassured parents and guardians that learning will resume on May 10th as planned. Magoha was lessening concerns that the high COVID-19 infection rate would bring unusual delays in school reopening.
Speaking in Kiambu County on Monday while supervising the opening of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams container, the CS stated that current data shows a declining COVID-19 infection rate across the country.
“I’m hoping since it looks like the pandemic is going to flatten, there is no need for me to summon stakeholders as the timetable is likely to remain the same for the rest of the year,” CS Magoha said
Schools Reopening on May, Magoha Reassures Parents
Meanwhile, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results will be released within the week to allow for convenient form one selection. This is after completion of the marking of Insha and Composition papers which contribute 40 percent in the final Kiswahili and English papers respectively.
Sources at the Ministry indicated that the KCPE exam results could be out anytime this week. On March 26, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a cessation of movement in 5 counties as the COVID-19 outbreak reached its worst-ever stage in the country.
Under the new directive, Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu, and Nakuru would be treated as one zone and residents would be prohibited from crossing over to other counties.
“You can therefore move freely within the 5 counties. You will not however be able to leave and enter the One Zoned Area,” Nzioka Waita, the Chief of Staff at President’s office, said on Twitter.
At the time, the positivity rate of coronavirus in Kenya had hit 22% compared with January’s 2%. The latest statistics show a positivity rate of 11.8% with the country’s total number of positive cases standing at 145,670.
