In a much-anticipated relief for school administrators, the Ministry of Education has announced a significant financial injection of Sh16 billion, set to be disbursed next week. This crucial development comes on the heels of mounting concerns expressed by headteachers and principals just a day earlier, as they grappled with the looming financial deadlock that posed a serious threat to their preparations for upcoming exams.

Belio Kipsang, the esteemed Principal Secretary for Basic Education, has provided detailed insights into the allocation of these funds. Junior Schools will receive a substantial sum of Sh1.75 billion, while primary schools are slated to benefit from Sh1.56 billion.

The lion’s share of the funding, a substantial Sh16.24 billion, will be channeled towards supporting secondary schools, particularly through the Free Day Secondary Education program.

In a reassuring statement, Kipsang emphasized, “To ensure the seamless functioning of all school activities, the Ministry of Education has successfully secured Sh16,249,982,722.28 billion in capitation funds from The National Treasury, which will be meticulously distributed to learners in public Primary, Junior, and Secondary Schools.”

Furthermore, the Principal Secretary has pledged that these funds will be promptly credited to school accounts during the coming week, thereby ensuring an uninterrupted flow of educational activities.

Additionally, in a move aimed at safeguarding the health and safety of students, the government has enforced a prohibition on any on-site activities during the third term.

This term, which commenced on August 28, 2023, is set to continue until October 27, serving as a crucial period of preparation for the KCPE and KPSEA national examinations, scheduled to kick off on October 30.

The concerns raised by school administrators, as reported by The Standard, had escalated into a financial crisis that cast a shadow over school operations and cast doubt on the preparedness for the KCPE and KCSE examinations. Omboko Milemba, the Chairman of Kuppet, has taken proactive steps by reaching out to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and calling upon Parliament to swiftly intervene in expediting the release of these vital funds.
