Geoffrey Monari, chief executive officer of Universities Fund, has announced that all needy and vulnerable college and university students will receive government loans and scholarships.

This will be applicable to all needy students chosen to enrol in public higher education institutions, the number of which presently stands at 130,485, even those without national identification cards, according to Monari.

“Under the new funding paradigm, no student will go without funding. All of the KUCCPS-placed students who apply for financial aid will be awarded loans and scholarships, according to Monari.

The head of University Funds also revealed that 9,622 students enrolled in different private institutions of higher education around the nation will also benefit from the new government loans and scholarships.

The organisation received a total of Sh19.6 billion in financing, which would be used under the new university funding model to pay for government scholarships.

President William Ruto introduced the New Funding Model on May 3, 2023, to address the financial issues that higher education institutions are now facing as a result of rising enrollment in the face of insufficient funding.

The administration is eager to implement the finance scheme, which it claims will guarantee inclusion and prevent any kid from falling behind.

For the first time, kids from low-income families will have equitable access to higher education and technical vocational training. Over 45,000 vulnerable and highly poor university students and 42,000 TVET students from the class of 2022 would receive complete funding under the Government Scholarships and Loans, according to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu at the fund’s debut in July.

In contrast to the old system, where higher education institutions provided financing, the new model will provide funding to students.

Based on the students’ familial circumstances and the price of their university programmes, the state will fund them.

According to President William Ruto’s announcement, students would be paid based on their need in one of four categories: vulnerable, severely needy, needy, or less needy.
