Peter Ndegwa, the CEO of Safaricom, one of Kenya’s leading telecommunications companies, has been designated as the Chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology. This significant appointment is part of a series of state appointments made by President William Ruto and will officially commence on November 1, 2023, lasting for a five-year term. It was made possible under the authority of the Universities Act, 2012, appointing Peter Ndegwa Waititu as the university’s new Chancellor.

The role of Chancellor is prestigious and holds authority over the governance and leadership of the institution, playing a crucial role in guiding its academic and administrative direction. Importantly, Peter Ndegwa will be taking over from James Mwangi, the CEO of Equity Bank, who has served as Chancellor at Meru University for two consecutive five-year terms. Mwangi has brought valuable insights from the corporate sector into the academic realm and currently holds the position of Chancellor at the Open University of Kenya (OUK).

Peter Ndegwa’s appointment as Chancellor represents a convergence of corporate and academic leadership in Kenya. With his extensive experience in the corporate world, particularly in leading Safaricom, it is anticipated that he will bring valuable perspectives and insights to the governance of Meru University. This appointment underscores the significance of promoting collaboration and growth between the corporate and education sectors in Kenya.

Ndegwa’s tenure as Chancellor will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Meru University of Science and Technology. This move is poised to influence the institution’s direction and development, offering exciting possibilities for the university’s academic community and students.
