Ruto VS Gachagua: President Tears Into ‘Stupid’ Politics of Tribalism- “Mtu wa mitego na shares utashindana na nani?”

President William Ruto has strongly criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for promoting divisive politics.

While addressing residents in Kakamega County on Monday, January 20, Ruto expressed concerns over what he described as an increasing trend of tribalism, political games, and divisive statements. Without directly naming Gachagua, he called on leaders to prioritize national unity and focus on addressing the country’s development needs rather than resorting to hatred or ethnic politics to gain support.

“There are individuals attempting to compete with us, but they thrive on mischief, tribalism, and discussions about government shareholding. Who can succeed with such tactics? Let me tell them plainly—they should find meaningful ideas to present to the public because hatred, tribalism, and dividing people won’t take them anywhere. That’s foolishness,” Ruto remarked.

Ruto’s comments came just a day after Gachagua had publicly criticized him, accusing him of manipulating Members of Parliament to push his political agenda. Speaking during a church service in Laikipia on Sunday, January 19, Gachagua alleged that MPs were acting as Ruto’s mouthpieces, relaying messages that were preplanned by the President.

According to Gachagua, Ruto has a habit of directing leaders on what to say during public meetings. He recounted his own experience working under Ruto, stating, “When MPs speak, they are saying what Ruto has instructed them to say. I worked closely with him, and he would dictate what I should address. Initially, I complied, but I later stopped following his instructions. He would sit with a pen, drafting what leaders should say, but I eventually ignored him and spoke about my own concerns.”

Gachagua further alleged that a recent comment by a Western Kenya MP about isolating the Mt. Kenya region was not the MP’s personal opinion but part of Ruto’s larger strategy. He assured the public that such plans would not succeed.
