Ruto Directs Open University to Cut Fees By 75%
The cost of higher education might drop by up to 75% thanks to the nation’s first full-fledged virtual university, according to President William Ruto, who disclosed that it will only have a little operational budget.
The President of Kenya declared that he and the university’s recently appointed chancellor, James Mwangi, had devised a framework to decrease training costs to a quarter of what traditional universities charge on Thursday, when he handed the Open University of Kenya (OUK) its charter.
“At first, the vice chancellor assured me that the fee would be half of what it would be at a typical institution. But (chancellor) James and I have agreed that we want it to cost a quarter, not half, and he has already explained to me how we are going to achieve it, Ruto remarked.
The President defended the choice, claiming that Kenya Kwanza’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) is consistent with increasing access to higher education for low-income people.
He continued, “Today Kenya makes history by opening the door of the university for everyone who wishes to receive higher education from the comfort of their homes, offices, kiosks, farms, or other hustles.”
The first group of pupils to join in the online school will do so in September of this year.
The university comprises four schools: agriculture, business, education, and science and technology.

The majority of the seven courses offered by OUK are graduate- and postgraduate-level degree programmes.
Data Science, Economics and Statistics, Business and Entrepreneurship, Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, and Technology Education are just a few of the bachelor’s degree options available.
Additionally, there are two postgraduate diplomas: one in leadership and accountability, and the other in learning design and technology.
The institution is anticipated to charge between Sh10,400 and Sh10,900 per module, depending on the course, according to a study presented by the technical committee that developed the road plan for its establishment.
