Ruto appoints Mwangi the equity boss as open university chancellor
James Mwangi, CEO of Equity, was named Chancellor of Kenya’s first virtual public university on Thursday by President William Ruto, who is based at Konza Technopolis.
The council’s chairperson was chosen as Professor Ezra Maritim.
The President remarked that he had faith in Mwangi’s ability to govern and expressed his confidence in him.

“When I told CS Machogu who I wanted to be for the position of Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya, I was very clear about who I wanted to be. I am confident that the university is secure under his management, Ruto remarked.
At the university’s premises in Konza Technopolis City in Machakos County on Thursday, Ruto spoke after presenting the charter.

In a ceremony attended by many leaders, including high government officials including Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, MPs, and Governors among others, the President issued the charter.
According to the law, William Samoei Ruto, President of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, declared himself “satisfied” that the awarding of the charter to the Open University of Kenya would improve higher education in Kenya.
When granting the varsity’s charter, the president invoked Section 24 (1b) of the University Act.
On August 3, 2023, William Samoei Ruto, the president of Kenya and the commander of the armed forces, gave the Open University of Kenya a charter and expressed his best wishes for the institution.
‘The Innovative University for Inclusive Prosperity’ will serve as the varsity’s operating motto.
