On Friday night, Liverpool target Romeo Lavia was anticipated to play for Southampton against Sheffield Wednesday, but he was left on the bench.

Romeo Lavia was relegated to a spectator role during Southampton’s season-opening 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.

Lavia, 19, has been widely linked with a move away from the Saints since their relegation from the Premier League in May, and Liverpool have had two substantial offers for the talented teenager turned down so far this summer.

Russell Martin, the new Southampton manager, insisted that Lavia would play on Friday night after the second of Liverpool’s proposals was rejected earlier this week.

However, Lavia was left on the sideline as Martin began his reign in exemplary fashion.

Martin was defiant in the pregame buildup at Hillsborough when queried about Lavia and James Ward-Prowse, who has also been linked with a move away from the club.

During his pregame press conference, he stated:

“Both will be involved as it stands, I don’t know if anything will change between now and then. Do I think they will be Southampton players by the end of the window? I have not got a clue. What I hope and what I think are probably very different.”

Martin, however, reneged on his promise and denied Lavia any opportunity to shine at Hillsborough.

Even when Lee Gregory equalized Adam Armstrong’s first-half goal to restore parity, Martin resisted introducing the highly regarded midfielder Lavia from the bench.

Romeo Lavia did not play in Southampton’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Martin ruthlessly substituted Joe Aribo, another Saints midfielder, to bolster his engine room in the closing phases of the match against Lavia.

Liverpool are in need of midfield reinforcements ahead of next weekend’s Premier League opener at Chelsea, so Southampton’s stance on Lavia could provide fresh encouragement.

This week, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both left Anfield for the Saudi Pro League, leaving the Reds with few options.

The Reds’ most recent offer for Lavia is rumored to be worth approximately £41 million, which is significantly less than the £50 million valuation Southampton has placed on their desired midfielder.

A midfield overhaul was always on Jurgen Klopp’s to-do list for the summer, and the club has already spent big on Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

After the unexpected departures of Henderson and Fabinho, another midfielder is squarely on the German’s list of priorities.

It remains to be seen whether a third bid for Lavia will be submitted in the coming days or whether the Reds will move on to other targets.
