Richard Otieno’s Wife Reveals Activist’s Final Moments

The wife of murdered activist Richard Otieno has claimed her husband was targeted due to his vocal criticism of President William Ruto’s administration.

Speaking on Monday, January 20, she revealed that her late husband had expressed fears of being followed by three unidentified individuals in the days leading to his death.

Otieno’s troubles reportedly began in June last year during anti-government protests. He was arrested for allegedly participating in the arson attack on the home of Molo MP Kuria Kimani.

According to his wife, Otieno also survived an assault in November, allegedly orchestrated by associates of a local politician.

Detailing the events of his death, she recounted hearing a loud scream near their gate. Rushing to investigate, she discovered her husband severely injured with deep head wounds.

“On that day, he called to say he was on his way home. When I opened the gate, it was already ajar, so I went back inside. Moments later, I heard someone screaming,” she said. “I found him lying on the ground with deep cuts on his head. Earlier, he had mentioned spotting people trailing him.”

Family lawyer Roselinda Wamaitha added that Otieno had received public death threats, some of which were documented through screenshots, naming specific individuals.

“He had been receiving threats, and the evidence is out there, including names of those involved,” Wamaitha said.

The family has accused police of delaying investigations despite growing protests from local residents demanding justice.

In response to public outcry, homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were deployed to Molo on Monday to investigate Otieno’s death.
