Revise Examiners’ payment Rates up, KUPPET Chair Demands

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers’ (KUPPET) National Chairman, Omboko Milemba, has issued an appeal to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to revise the payment rates issued to teachers marking national examinations.

Addressing the National Assembly recently, Milemba expressed serious concerns regarding the current remuneration offered to teachers for their dedicated involvement in invigilating, supervising, and grading national exams.

“Despite their strenuous work, the KNEC often delays payments to teachers and offers them meagre compensation per script,” he asserted.

Milemba, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Emuhaya, acknowledged KNEC’s recent efforts to increase the number of marking centers and slightly raise marking fees. However, he argued that these measures fell short of effectively addressing the underlying issue.

During a commencement ceremony at the Kenya Institute of Special Education in Kasarani, Machogu announced several measures aimed at improving the examination environment.

These measures include expanding the number of examination centers to enhance accessibility and prevent cheating.

To achieve this goal, certain items such as handbags, briefcases, backpacks, and traditional kiondos will no longer be allowed in examination rooms, with vigilant invigilators enforcing this ban.

The prohibition also extends to students’ use of smartwatches, programmable calculators, and Bluetooth devices during examinations.

Furthermore, center managers will now collect exam papers twice a day.

The decision was made in response to the realization that exam leakage predominantly affects afternoon papers, as explained by Julius Melly, Tinderet Member of Parliament and Chair of the Parliamentary Education Committee.
