The Thogotho Teachers Training College (TTC) has published its plans for the 2023 intake of the Diploma Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and Diploma Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) programmes, marking a significant step towards improving the country’s educational landscape. There were 11,359 spots available for DPTE candidates as of July 2023, but DECTE accepted 2,081 enthusiastic applications.
This action supports efforts to strengthen the nation’s teacher preparation programmes and is coordinated with the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS).
As September approaches, ambitious teachers are counting down to their reporting date and eagerly awaiting the start of their revolutionary teacher preparation programmes. As they prepare to mould young minds and have an impact on the future of education, these people have a bright future ahead of them.
This year, there were substantial modifications made to the application process itself. Previously, a C average was required, but now a simple C average would do. More students will now be able to pursue their passion for teaching thanks to this modification. The Ksh 1,500 application fee, payable via Mpesa to KUCCPS, is intended to ensure equality and accessibility throughout the application process.
The Kenya Teachers Colleges Principals’ Association (KTCPA) welcomed the change in admission standards, demonstrating the cooperation between educational stakeholders in streamlining entry procedures. The emphasis of the new standards is on subject knowledge, and students must show mastery in their area of specialisation. This is in line with how the educational landscape is changing and makes sure that instructors have the tools they need to successfully apply the competency-based curriculum in classrooms.
These prospective teachers will spend three years completing their academic requirements, culminating in a thorough teaching programme that includes fieldwork that lasts a full academic term. With the help of this practical experience, teachers will be better equipped to deal with the challenges of real-world classroom dynamics.

Notably, there have been issues in the education sector, including as poor enrollment at some TTCs, delayed tuition payments, and insufficient budgetary allocations. Ezekiel Machogu’s Ministry of Education is actively tackling these problems. Updated admission criteria are being implemented in an effort to expand the number of pre-service teachers while simultaneously maintaining the calibre of their education.
