Ray of hope as TSC, unions meet to review salary deal

The tutors’ trade unions have now been called by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to a meeting on pay negotiations on Monday.

The 2021/2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which the unions and TSC signed in the midst of a challenging economic climate in 2021, is anticipated to be reviewed at the meeting.

However, the unions made members promises that after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) approved TSC, a reassessment of the base salary would be conducted.

And in a letter dated August 15, TSC has now invited the unions to the Kenya School of Government (KSG) to evaluate the CBA.

This letter’s main goal is to invite you to a meeting with TSC that is set to take place on August 22 at 9:00 am. According to a letter from TSC, the meeting will be held at Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, Nairobi.

Three teacher unions exist in Kenya: the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (Kusnet), and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers (Kuppet).

The invitation coincides with the SRC’s declaration of a 7–10% salary increase, which came as a comfort to teachers who had been campaigning for a pay increase.

Equity and justice

Teachers will benefit most from the salary increase for federal officials under the new system, which will be retroactive to July 1. According to SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich, the study aims to harmonise compensation and benefits across the public sector while adhering to the principles of affordability and fiscal sustainability.
