Raila Rejects Presidential Results
Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate of Azimio la Umoja, has refused to concede defeat after being defeated in the recent elections by Kenya Kwanza’s William Samoei Ruto.
Raila told the press on Tuesday, August 16, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, had broken the law by announcing the results alone.
Raila claimed that the IEBC lacked a quorum when it announced the winner of the presidential election.
He went on to accuse Chebukati of withholding the results from the other commissioners before making them public.
The Azimio La Umoja went ahead and declared the results null and void, requesting that the courts declare such an election invalid.
Raila claimed that the IEBC has been biased in the past and that their conduct in the 2017 election resulted in the annulment of the presidential election.
He claimed that Iebc chairperson Wafula Chebukati did not follow the law and the constitution. He also claimed that the chairperson and the number of commissioners did not follow the law before announcing the winner of the 2022 presidential election.
We were shocked to learn that Mr. Chebukati chose the winner of the 2022 election on his own. “He denied access to the results to all of the commissioners,” Raila stated.
He went on to say that just two hours before the presidential election results were announced, Chebukati called a meeting and informed the commissioners of the results he intended to announce.
“Our view in Azimio is clear. The numbers announced by Chebukati are null and void and must be quashed by a court of law. There is no winner or president-elect. That was gross impunity,” he stated.
