The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Honorable Wilson Sossion hosted several BBI luminaries in his Bomet Central sub-county residence on Saturday 19th September 2020. Sossion was celebrating her daughter's admission to the Bar.
Among the key politicians whowrerk in attendance included the opposition leader Right hon Raila Amollo Odinga, Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa among others.
Former prime minister Hon Raila Odinga swam into the battle between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Knut, saying the Teachers commission should not destroy the union.
"TSC should protect the union and the teachers as provided for in the Constitution. The union should get its rightful dues from the commission and we will ensure that happens," said former Prime Minister Odinga
Knut's revenue has been lessened to thirty-seven million from over kSh100 million due to the mass exit of members. Honorable Odinga noted that teachers have their right to belong to any party of their choice.
He asked teachers who had withdwawn their members from knut due to forced circumstances to return to the party. He said Better days were coming for Knut "The sooner you go back to knut the better… If you become unionless, you will have no one to defend them. He pledged to ensure that teacgers' rights are respected in Kenya.
Peter Amunga strongly accused Sossion of engaging in BBI politics instead of concentrating on championing teachers affairs. "KNUT as a union started failing teachers when the sg joined politics and parliament, ” said Amunga.
His sentiments were echoed by Wiri Leaks, teacher blogger who noted that Majority of the teachers had decided to stay put and not to attend the meeting.
