The process of filling in vacant positions left by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) top commissioners has begun following President Kenyatta appointments towards the cause.
President Kenyatta has appointed a 9-member TSC panel tasked with the appointment of the chairperson and another member of the Commission.
In a Gazette notice, dated 24th of February Kenyatta said the team will be tasked to pick nominees for selection as the chairperson and one member of the TSC.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 8 (2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint under paragraph (a)Thomas Koyier — Chairperson for the Selection Panel,” read part of the notice.
The 9 member team includes Dr Hellen Misenda, Eva Nyoike and Prof Stanley Waudo. Others are Charles Mutinda, Dr Mary Gaturu, Njoki Kahiga, Margaret Lilian Geno and Richard Kibagendi will sit on the board as members.
The first person to chair the commission since it was made constitutional was Lydia Nzomo who took an oath of office in 2014 and left last year after the collapse of her six-year term on November 18th.
TSC is also missing a Board of Governance member. This is after Cleophas Tirop vacated office in 2019 March. The other 6 members are due to exit next month.
Each region of the defunct provinces represented by one member bringing a total of 9 commissioners at the TSC. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has been at the forefront calling for a quick preparation to begin the process of replacing the officials.
“The communication is, therefore, to urge you to expedite constituting an independent and credible panel to undertake the process of appointing a TSC chair and seven commissioners,” said Wilson Sossion through a letter dated February 16th.
TSC was constitutionalised in March 2015 after the recruitment and appointment of the chairperson and commissioners.
